Google is expanding the means to make video calls on smart screens powered by Google Assistant with new support for group calls in Google Meet and Duo. The new group video calling capabilities will be available on Nest Hub Max and other screens intelligents Assistant with cameras from today.
Just as you can do with individual calls, it is possible to start a group call from a smart screen with your voice or by touching the 'screen. Groups created in the Duo mobile app will be accessible on the smart screen and can support up to 32 people at a time. The smart screen will display up to eight participants, including you, at a time. If you're using Nest Hub Max, auto framing will continue to work so you can move around freely and stay focused behind closed doors on other callers.
The Support for Google Meet group calls is more designed for work meetings and other large groups. It supports up to 100 participants in a call, and you can join meetings by entering the meeting code (aftersays "Hey Google, join a meeting ") or via a calendar entry synchronized with the smart display. If you start a new meeting from the smart screen, a push notification will be sent to your phone which you can use to share the invitation with other people. Google says integration with Meet does not yet support the auto-framing features of Nest Hub Max, and it will not be available on other Assistant launch smart screens.
For those who use accounts G Suite and have Meet meetings on these calendars, Google has an option for admins to activate beta access to the Assistant on these accounts. The main account on the device will need to be the G Suite account for 'It retrieves calendar entries. Google tells me that it is working on ways to make the transition from a G Suite account to a personal account on a smart screen more transparent in the future.
Finally, the af assistantSmart plugs and speakers also benefit from a new 'speed dial' function called household contacts which allows you to pin favorite contacts for easier access. Once configured, it will allow anyone with access to the smart screen to call these contacts by voice or by typing their name on the screen.
It is clear that Google has prioritized the deployment of these features based on the amount of video calls used during the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated social distances, and they should make it easier for you to use Google’s video call services if you have a smart screen in your home, but so does the Facebook portal and Echo Show from Amazon, they are limited to Google services and if you use Zoom or one of the many other video calling options currently available, they will not be very useful, smart displayor not. I hope Google will find a way to make other services available on smart screens in the future, but I'm not holding my breath.
