In 2021, more than ten years after the start of the smartphone revolution, it's easy to forget how many design trends have disappeared. Since 2007, with the launch of the first iPhone, we've lost keyboards, buttons, ports, bezels and more in the quest for “less”.
What the "perfect " smartphone is supposed to look like is a question that has yet to be answered, but one that designers are constantly working to resolve. At the moment, it looks like the solution is a glass sandwich with a screen and nothing else, and 2021 looks more and more likely to be the year that that `` final '' design can appear.
Basically Apple should be leading the charge. Apple occupies a strange position in the smartphone market, having a reputation for progressive conservatism in design, but regularly leading the charge on new trends. Apple was the pioneer of bi changesin-likes such as the screen notch, face unlock, multiple rear cameras, removal of headphone jack and fingerprint sensors.
Such is the cultural weight and influence of the company that the choices it makes tend to be accepted by the general public. Wireless charging came closer to mainstream when Apple embraced the technology in its handsets, and the true wireless headphone market exploded when the headphone jack was discontinued and AirPods were first sold as an alternative to wired options.
If the natural evolution of phone design is towards something "portless ", then it is likely that only Apple could pull it off in such a way that 'it is becoming common.
And Apple, to date, has been one of the few companies with the 'courage ' to pmake such decisions ... could it be set up with the iPhone 13 ? Some lea ks and rumors suggest that one of these handsets will be portless ... so what is the likelihood of that happening?
Why switch to portless?
What is the point of going without a port? There are many schools of thought on the subject.
The main engine is just aesthetic - having fewer obstacles makes it look and feel cleaner in the hand. There is also a benefit to durability, as the charging ports tend to come loose after continued use, their absence would mean that would cease to be a problem.
The benefits would also take the form of an increase in the waterproof ratings, a slightly more durable construction and an increased space in the body of the smartphone for other components, such as larger batteries.
These are all the benefits of removing the headphone jack, it is likely that they would be reproduced with the removal of the power port.
Of course, there are a number of drawbacks, especially in terms of usability. Wireless charging, while convenient at times, can be tricky and generates a lot of heat. This requires the use of specific and relatively expensive chargers and takes longer to charge fully charged phones than wired options.
Power ports also tend to act as data ports for syncing with PCs / Macs and for using dongles and accessories - removing this option would introduce a major drawback for many.
With its iPhone 12 line, however Apple tried to solve the first problem. Loading MagSafe is intended to keep the charger in the correct position on the connected iPhone in order to ensure stable and efficient power transferquick.
So far, a number of accessories have been released that take advantage of this feature, and Apple's attention in this area has led to increased awareness wireless charging as an option, even if this is still relatively niche.
Preparation in this area may indicate that the company intends to release a fully portless smartphone in 2021, although at this point it's hard to tell. Any iPhone release will usually take place in the fourth quarter of that year, and before mass production begins, it's hard to find any leaks or information that isn't purely speculative.
Information supply chain
That being said, there have been a number of " educated guesses "from influential prognosticators who indicate portless iPhone could make an appearance in the seconhalf of 2021.
Jon Prosser, well known for his accurate predictions in this area, is convinced that this will happen . Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities (my king of supply chain analysis predictions) has released a study that shows 2021 is the year a portless iPhone will make its debut.
This report, released in 2019 , correctly predicted the iPhone 's release list for 2020, he giving some credibility. He predicts that an iPhone in 2021 will be portless, possibly the most premium model. This would then define the trend for the year to follow, with cThis design feature carried over to the cheaper models.
Such techniques have been tried and tested, especially with Apple. Its iPhone X was one of the first consumer smartphones to sport a notch on his screen, and he was the first to break through the $ 1,000 price barrier. It was a clear success for Apple, demonstrating the company's ability to make the "new" feel not only desirable, but essential.
There may be limits to this capacity of course, maybe even the Cupertino company might not have enough capital with the public to force this last and very last change.
After everything, other companies have tried and failed to do the same. Chinese manufacturer Meizu's efforts in 2019 are famous crashed and burned . The company tried to crowdfund the production of a portless smartphone, mostly as part of a publicity stunt, but failed to reach.indre its funding objective.
Although many different factors have come into play, a key point may be the reluctance of the public to abandon the convenience of wired charging. We've seen concept devices try to do the same since my Manufacturers like Oppo also.
Either way, if the reports are true, all eyes will be on Apple and the success of its portless phone. The company has leaped from strength to strength over the past decade, and it looks like little will happen in its path.
