Microsoft has a second next-gen console in the boxes: code name Lockhart
Called Lockhart, this console would take most of the improvements made by the new generation of Xbox Series X. Today, a Microsoft document was leaked on Twitter, with multiple references.
Rumors that Microsoft will offer a smaller and cheaper version of la Xbox Series X is not new. Recently, we reported that an announcement would be made next July.
The Xbox Series X is not even out yet that Microsoft would soon consider offering a more modest version. A practice widely used for the current generation of consoles, with the Xbox One S All Digital .
In a document from Microsoft which has just been published on Twitter, it talks about the Lockhart project and several “Project Scarlett consoles”. Note that the files also include a reference to "Anaconda, the code name for the Series X.
According to Tom Warren of The Verge, the Lockhart project could run on the same processor as the Series X. This is new in the since previous rumors described a console halfway between the One and the next Series X. The componentss would be resumed, but with a reduced striking power.
Microsoft could also respond to the Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition , a version of the future console without disc player, whose price should be lower than that of the standard model.
We could therefore expect a fully digital Xbox Series S, and even less expensive than its competitor. Some rumors also suggest an aggressive price between 199 and 299 €.
Naturally, such a document does not tell us much about the technical characteristics of the possible future console. The Xbox SDK includes a" special mode Lockhart, whose activation, sources said, would reduce the kit's performance to the standards that Microsoft plans to achieve with the potential Xbox Series S.
The first returns speak of 7.5 GB of usable RAM, a slightly underclocked CPU speed (underclocked ) and about 4 teraflops of performance. This is much less than the 13.5 GB of usable RAM and the 12 teraflops of the Xbox Series X. This configuration would be made available to developers to optimize their future titles, on both consoles.
While the next generation is putting on a 4K resolution and 60 FPS, this more modest version would opt for 1080p or 1440p.
It remains to be seen whether Microsoft is launchingwill be this console at the same time as the flagship products of this end of the year.
