AMD promises to deliver next-generation EPYC 'Milan' server processor by year-end

AMD reiterated its intention to begin shipments of its 3rd generation EPYC processors for servers in late 2020.

The new processors are expected to increase performance compared to existing server platforms and will therefore strengthen the positions of '' AMD in the lucrativedata centers.

"We remain on track to begin shipping our next generation Milan server processor with Zen 3 at the end of this year " said Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, during the company's recent call.

The 3rd generation EPYC 7003 series processors from AMD are based on the Zen 3 microarchitecture which is expected to boost IPC performance. New processors will continue to use the multi-chip module (MCM) design, but each core complex chip (CCD) will have a new internal layout that groups the eight cores into a core complex (CCX) with a ' 32 + MB Unified Cache L3 in order to reduce latencies and improves performance by heart.

Upcoming AMD processors will continue to feature until 64-core, but microarchitectural improvements and, perhaps, an increase in clocks should make them perform better compared to existing AMD EPYC processors at the same TDP.

"Milan is a very competitive product and our goal is to really satisfy a large part of the server workloads and we believe we have the capabilities to do that " said Su.
