Samsung: smartphones from 2021 will be equipped with 16

This process uses lasers and light-sensitive chemicals to etch the chip. It is manufactured by the second production line at its Pyeongtaek plant in South Korea.

The new LPDDR5 16 GB 10nm has a speed of 6400 Mbp s. That's 16% more than the 5,500 Mbps of the current 12 GB LPPDR5. To give a concrete example, such a speed can transfer about 10 Full HD 5 GB movies, or 51.2 GB of data, in one second.

The new LPDDR5 chips based on 1z technology are also 30% thinner than last year's LPDDR5 chips based on 1y technology. This will help make foldable smartphones and tablets more purposes.

The 1y process required the combination of twelve chips (eight 12 GB chips and four 8 GB chips) to make a 16 GB RAM set. However, the same capacitycan be achieved with the 1z process using only eight 16GB chips.

In addition, smartphones such as the Galaxy S20 Ultra , which is the most upscale of the S20 series , or the Nubia Red Magic 5G already have variants with 16 GB of RAM. However, this new generation promises to be even faster. In comparison the iPhone 12 Pro will only benefit from 6 GB of RAM . But iOS requires less RAM thanks to better optimization.

Gigantic factory takes care of production

Line 2 in Pyeongtaek is touted by Samsung as the largest production line semiconductors to the world. The factory that manufactures the 10nm LPDDR5 EUV DRAM chips covers more than 128,900 square meters .

In total, the Samsung factory in Pyeongtaek covers 289,000 square meters if we also take into account the first factory, called Pyeongtaek Line 1, and the adjacent facilities.
