And if you don 't have time to read this entire article, we have made a short video to introduce you to the biggest headlines below:

11 of the biggest social media stories this month

Snapchat

1) Snapchat has partnered with academic journals on Discover.

The pop-up messaging app will share original content from US colleges and universities on Snapchat Discover - in editions specific to each college's location.

Business Insider noted that this is the firstre time parent company Snap Inc. has partnered with smaller publishers to create original Snapchat Discover content - where it has previously worked with outlets like Vox, BuzzFeed, and The New York Times.

What is typical is Snapchat's drive to catch the interest of younger people - between the ages of 18 and 24, the demographic where Snapchat is most popular. More than half of eMarketer survey respondents aged 18 to 24 said they use the app all the time.

It will be interesting to see how this content works - for Snapchat and for the partner colleges that create the content. Younger users are the app growth path - or at least, its way to prevent decline - more on that.

2) Snapchat has more of uusers, but less value.

Parent company Snap Inc. ran its second quarter 2017 earnings call, and the results weren't exactly exactly.

Snapchat grew by seven million users in the last quarter, but it was still a failure - when it reached 173 million users at By the end of the second quarter, investors predicted it would reach 175.2 million instead. Its share price fell about 6%, as the company also said its average revenue per user was $ 0.02 lower than expected.

As Pinterest becomes a more marketable social network, with the ability for users to touch and buy specific products in Pins, it will beIt's interesting to see how the competition intensifies.

YouTube

11) YouTube has added built-in messaging and vertical video functionality.

At the very end of the month, YouTube unveiled a brand new visual identity - featuring a new logo for the first time.

Two of the big changes that marketers will want to note? New in-app messaging functionality and responsive video display which now shows vertical and square videos.

The new in-app messaging allows users to share videos with friends without having to leave the app, which is the new name of the game for social media - bring people to do what they want, without having to leave the platform. Plus, this feature is also a step towards competing YouTube with Facebook for a bigger slice of the video pie.

And in another change, YouTube now supports vertical and square video formats in addition to horizontal video. Remember anything - like, maybe, all the other social networks?

Vertical videos were made popular by Snapchat, and are everywhere on Instagram and Facebook now. The same goes for square videos. Why? Because these formats take up more of the mobile user's screen - keeping them more involved in the app while they spend time streaming. Marketers should consider incorporating YouTube into their video distribution strategies in addition to social media.
